For more than a year, Dave and I have been eating Pop Weaver Light Butter Popcorn as a snack, mostly because it was super duper low in calories. Or so we thought. Check out the nutrition label. How many calories do you think are in one bag?

Confusing?!?! AM I RIGHT!?!?

Is it just us or is that label really confusing? Maybe we're idiots.

Is a serving size 5 cups popped or 1 cup popped? If it is 5 cups popped and there are 2.5 servings in a bag, then there are 12.5 cups of popcorn in a bag for a total of 250 calories. REALLY?!?! If the serving size is 1 cup popped and there are 2.5 servings in a bag, then there are 2.5 cups of popcorn in a bag for a total of 50 calories.

We broke down and measured it.

And we're still confused.

We get the Orville Reddenbacher 100 calorie Smart Pop. 1 serving is 1 bag and 1 bag has 100 calories.

I used to buy the same sized bags as Amy (above). Recently I switched to an air popper, because I didn't like idea of the chemicals in the microwave popcorn. However, the little bags were really helpful and I preferred them to the big bags.

Popped popcorn is really hard to measure. That's exactly why they mention the unpopped kernels, and why your measurement didn't produce either of the results you expected. The reason they mention the popped popcorn calories is that not all of the kernels pop, so they're giving you a 10 calorie write-off on 5 cups.

I think you can believe that the bag contains 2 1/2 servings, so yes, if you divided the bag equally between the two of you, you would be eating 125 calories - 2.5 servings per bag * 5 cups in a serving * 20 calories in a cup / 2 (unless you eat the unpopped kernels too, and then it would be 137.5).

Try this: before popping the bag, rip it open and measure the unpopped kernels. If you have a kitchen scale that can measure in grams, you could measure it more precisely that way. (Volume of non-liquid, odd-shaped ingredients is difficult.) Otherwise measure it with tablespoons. Are there 5 Tbsp?
